Shooting the breeze

I FEEL very honoured by the positive vibe around the upcoming Ward 34 Community Awards which will take place on July 28 at the Eastwood Civic Centre.

The aim of the event will be to honour Ward 34 community members who have contributed positively in the upliftment or building of our area.

Ward 34 is made up of Eastwood, Panorama, Cinderella Park, Malivana, Jesmondene and Madiba, which makes it interesting, unique and dynamic because it is complimented by various backgrounds and cultures.

This “new baby” and dream of mine - the awards - brings with it the support, ideas and encouragement from all angles and spheres, including business people, religious and community leaders, teachers and residents making the event stronger.

Thank you everyone for your suggestions, ideas, support and most importantly, your contribution.

Ward 34 residents will be excited to hear that the provisional list of nominees is interesting, growing and looking good.

On top of the list and with due respect, I will mention a few names that have been put forward or suggested by Ward 34 residents.

To whet your appetite names submitted so far include Shane Morrison (former SA U17 captain, SA U20 and SA U23 player), Shaun Donnely (former Jomo Cosmos, Umthatha Bush Bucks and AmaZulu), Shaun Potgieter (Orlando Pirates and Ajax Cape Town), Lucky Gordon (late professional karateka, businessman, former Eastwood Bizzards Netball Team and Social Smirnoff League Team owner), Arthur Baartman (former Kaizer Chiefs, African Wanderers, Dynamos and current Maritzburg United goalkeeper coach), Cedrick Conway (former SA Welterweight Champion), Rowan Dolphin (former SA U17, SA U20, SA U23 and AmaZulu player), JC Joshua (former Eastwood Primary principal), Barbara Thomson (Department of Environmental Affairs deputy minister), Wally Adams (late Ward 34 councillor), Arendse (former Eastwood Secondary principal), Henry “Mzalwane” Pietersen, Uncle Rafeeq (late Eastwood Taxi Association member), Father Mike Folley (former Eastwood Catholic Church), Ebby Hossen (SA Indoor Football Association [SAIFA- Futsal] secretary and referee), Ronnie Freeze (businessman), Nomalanga Hlubi (artist), Mike Amod (Ward 34 councillor), Dr Akoo, Mbulelo “OJ” Mabizela (former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates captain), Freddie Simons (Rebels), Pastor Payne, Enver Wiltwer (former Free State Stars, Chippa United and current Royal Eagles player), Dr I. Sooliman, Leornard Roots, Gerald Jackson, Deon Warren (development and youth coaches and co-ordinators), Darrel Pietersen (businessman), Hullamin, Filpro, Sealake, Mountain Rise Police Station, Karanichhas, Poobie Naidoo’s Sports, Walter Wheeler, Tevin Charlton, Keith Abrahams (junior development coaches), Gabo “Sanchez” Ngubane (Panorama businessman and socialite) and Dr Phillips.

I want to reiterate, this is not a “one-man band” event, but a Ward 34 community project.

It is unlikely that everybody’s names submitted will be honoured and the list will be shortened by the local organising committee in due course.

However, the doors are still open for names to be added.

My aim or our mission is to pay respect and honour deserving residents who have contributed positively to our community.

It is also to put Ward 34 on the map and I appreciate that this vision is receiving much needed support from our local business people.

Let us embrace our motto: “Let’s honour our heroes”.
