Shooting the Breeze

2017-07-12 06:00

SOME South African soccer followers were shocked last weekend when it was announced that the former Kaizer Chiefs player and Sobantu- born Michael “Bhizzah” Dlamini had died

I always took Bhizzar as a real soccer legend respected at the
national, provincial and local level, especially around Pietermaritzburg, Sobantu.

Dlamini was indeed a real sportsman and an intelligent player in his heydays.

He started his soccer career in
local soccer circles and played for a number of amateur teams and later for Maritzburg United, Kaizer Chiefs and Sobantu Manchester - his own team.

My first experience with him was in the mid-seventies when he quit Chiefs and start his own team,
Manchester in Sobantu.

His team quickly climbed the
success ladder and won promotion to the old NPSL and brought to Edendale’s Wadley Stadium clubs such as Chiefs, Wits University,
Acardia Sherpeds, Vaal Professional, Mangaung United, Benoni United, Orlando Pirates and others.

Dlamini’s contribution in Pietermaritzburg was not only massive, it changed the local soccer landscape in KZN.

His team attracted thousands of soccer diehards every Sunday at Wadley Stadium and his home games always received a full house.

Dlamini also recruited a lot of
local players and turned them into professionals.

Clyde Xaba, Shaka Khumalo,
Lovey Dlamini, Bomber Chamane, Nkosenye Dlamini, Ronnie Mthimkhulu, Ace Mathe, Dan Hlela and many more are just some of the names he turned.

Dlamini not only introduced Pietermaritzburg to NPSL games, he changed a lot of unknown players and fans lives as well.

Him starting a team, put the capital city of KZN on the SA map, and turned many people into professionals. He also created many jobs.

Dlamini will be laid to rest on Saturday. May his soul rest in peace.
