Shooting the Breeze

I AM getting many calls asking if I will stage the annual Ward 34 Community Awards Sports Day this year, however this is unlikely.

It is also disturbing that this annual event, if it was held, would have celebrated its 10th birthday.

As I said some weeks ago, the event was founded 10 years ago and at that time only attracted two teams and 30 children and adults, who took part in the fun run and walk.

I also remember that besides using money from my own pocket, I only had two sponsors.

One was my former schoolmate, friend and ex-Department of Sports administrator Themba Ndulini, and my friend Poobie Naidoo from Poobie Naidoo Sports.

Ndulini and Naidoo at that time were unaware they were founding event sponsors and little did they know the event would grow bigger every year.

Later on Babloo of Kara Nichha’s came on board and became a valuable major sponsor.

What breaks my heart is that this event normally caters for underprivileged communities, especially children from the nearby informal settlement and neighbourhood.

It also attracted communities from other wards.

There is only one reason that makes it impossible to host the event this year - at the Panorama School grounds there are no goalposts, which are the basics of playing soccer.

It is also raises a lot of questions about business people, companies and factories around Ward 34 - Eastwood, Cinderella Park, Panorama, Malivana, Madiba Section and Jesmondene - especially when you think about their involvement in their community projects, if any.

On a positive note, I have decided to walk around our neighbourhood and knock on the door of every nearby factory asking for help.

So wish me luck, but for now I will keep my fingers crossed.
