Shooting the Breeze

FAILING to bring the Nedbank Cup to Pietermaritzburg and being narrowly edged out by Free State Stars 1-0 at Cape Town Stadium during the final, Maritzburg United fans were left heartbroken.

To all Maritzburg United players, management, supporters and their technical bench under head coach Fadlu Davids, we are saying hard luck, we are proud of you, well done and we don’t blame you at all for unfortunately losing the final.

Looking back at this year’s season, I must say there are a couple of issues that are still troubling me about the Premier Soccer League (PSL).

Talking from experience and as a long serving scribe of this beautiful game and sports in general, I must say the recent decision by PSL to deduct points from Ajax Cape Town was a bit short-sighted, unfair and left a bitter taste to everybody.

By now we all know that Safa and PSL found the Urban Warriors guilty of using Tendai Ndoro as an illegible player during the past season.

I also don’t think that the PSL is aware that this Ndoro saga did not only leave the bad taste in a lot of SA soccer lovers, but created a bad perception about the way we do things in our country.

Secondly, as a proud KwaZulu- Natal resident, I don’t think the PSL thought about it wisely that the decision was going to affect not only the Urban Warriors but the entire KwaZulu-Natal province. To deprive one of the oldest and popular side in KZN, Usuthu, to play in the next season’s MTN 8 was a big and unfair blow to the entire Zulu Kingdom province.

The other questions that I keep on asking myself is why the PSL did not sort out this thorny issue from day one.

Is the PSL telling the country that when Tendai Ndoro was officially registered by Ajax at the beginning on the season they were not aware that was he illegible to play? Why was Ndoro allowed to play a couple of games in the first place and why did the PSL not notify or ward his team (Ajax Cape Town) from day one?

I guess as long as PSL big wigs, especially their executive committee, is still made by club representatives, nothing will be done 100% fair or come right in our soccer.
