Shooting the Breeze

LET me start by wishing all the participants, friends, relatives and colleagues that will be taking part in the popular and annual Comrades Marathon on Sunday. As a former athlete myself, I know what it takes to prepare for this Pietermaritzburg to Durban ultra event. I also take my hat off for the organisers at Comrades Marathon house for working around the clock for many months in order to put up a show of its kind.

I’m sure that this year’s event is going to create new history and will be at another level because it’s going to end at the new finishing venue, the Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Another issue that I want to visit is the coming back of one of the oldest team in South African soccer from Limpopo Black Leopards to PSL.

Watching Leopards management, players and their technical bench, under the head coach Joel Masuta, working hard and united was just out of this world.

The only thing I can tell the owner of Leopards, David Thidiela, is to stick to his old team and also bring in a few experienced players.

He must also keep his current head coach Masuta. In recent years it has become a norm of the teams getting rid of their coaches and players after winning a PSL status from NFD.

I must say, it was also disappointing and heart breaking to see Jomo Cosmos under Jomo Sono failing again. Maybe this time Sono will admit it that his coaching skills are no longer relevant to the current standard of SA soccer. He also needs to understand that his work as a boss is in the office.

He must just hire a young, charismatic and qualified coach for his team in order to take his team back to PSL. I respect Sono.

For his name sake, pride, history and for his greatness, he must just officially bow out and throw in the towel in his coaching career.
