Shooting the Breeze

2018-07-04 06:01

MY family members often accuse me of being over obsessed about the Edendale area.

I always tell them that my best days I ever lived and enjoyed were in Edendale in the early seventies and early eighties. A lot of people that are originally from Edendale will attest to this. The Greater Edendale area was the best, and was blessed from day one when the earth was made.

Around the area we had almost all the race groups you can find around South Africa, and we grew up playing together and sharing everything we had.

Our teams were also made by all race groups and treated one another as brothers. Our community also had and enjoyed different religions and backgrounds.

Although we had all these race groups staying together as neighbours, we lived in harmony and the neighbourhood spirit was pure class and unbelievable.

On Sunday, during the Bab’Ndima legacy finals, to see myself where I was born and where it started in my sporting life really made me emotional. To see my old school and teammates, like Mnqobi Simelane, Nte Mbovu- Madisha, Percy Lyons and Bomber Ndlovu, took me down memory lane.

To see our old crocks and former professional players, administrators and the real legends like Parkies Dlomo, Victor Madisha, Skhulu Vilakazi, Tom Ngcobo, December, Zeph Mthembu (just to name a few) who contributed a lot to local soccer, and especially to Edendale FA, was special and was another learning curve.

Again, and in a very loud way, I would like to congratulate the Edendale FA for honouring our former groundsman, the late Baba Ndima. To see the EFA actually rounding off the Bab’Ndima Legacy Cup finals was just a marvel, and it meant a lot to all Edendale residents.

Let me also thank the partners that came on board, sponsors like Govender’s Garage and Sibiya Funeral Services. Your contribution may look small, for now, but your help will be forever remembered in our hearts. May God bless your businesses and families.
