Shooting the Breeze

2018-07-11 06:01

MANY years ago, when local goalkeeper and former Eastwood Chelsea FC player Arthur Baartman turned professional, I asked him about the secrets of success.

The truth was that I was more than just excited to see a young boy from Eastwood officially joining a professional team.

In the late eighties and early nineties, people had a wrong perception about Eastwood, so to see something good coming out of there was a sweet tune to me. Last week, I was very emotional to see another Eastwood youngster end up playing for Transnet Safa School of Excellence, Ajax Cape Town and Orlando Pirates. For Shaun “Gandhi” Potgieter to actually come back from where it all started means a lot. I see many players becoming big stars who neglect, or simple forget, about their roots. Personally, in order to see or gauge my influence in a positive way, I must always make it happen for my community.

The Almighty God blessed us with different talents and skills but, if we can’t use them, or give back to our communi- ties, then we are not being honest with our lives and are not making our creator happy. To Potgieter and the founder of Rise & Shine Junior League, our Ward 34 Councillor Mike Amod, coaches and volunteers, keep up the good work and God will bless you guys many times.
