Shooting the Breeze

2018-07-18 06:01

AS most of you will know, I get excited very easily, and especially when I’m working towards a community project. To help and uplift my community around Eastwood, Panorama, Cinderella Park (Ward 34), and other nearby areas is really my passion.

I’m already excited and looking forward to our Ward 34 Annual Community Awards. This year’s event will be held on September 14 at Eastwood’s Civic Centre.

I was very glad and encouraged to see that our very first event of these awards, in 2017, had a big turnout and was a success. My local organising committee, under the guidance of our chairman and ward councillor Mike Amod, was always on point and the event was truly made special by passionate, hard workers.

The aim of the event is to honour our good people around Ward 34 who the community thinks are contributing positively, uplifting and putting us on the map in different spheres of life. Again, let me make it clear that this is not a political event or attached to any political party.

The rules are simple and straight-forward — if you want somebody; your friend, your neighbour, NGO, child, or coach; honoured for making an impact in our community, send their full name, contact number and a short profile to myself and Amod.

This year’s function is going to be bigger, more colourful and more exciting than last year’s event.

For the first time, the red carpet will be introduced for all the nominees, and we will have musical items rendered by community members.

A couple of government departments will be on board and event partners, donors, and sponsors will be given permission to display their services and colours on stage.

Last year’s Ward 34 born stars, such as Shaun Donnelly (former Jomo Cosmos, Mthatha Bush Bucks and Amazulu), Victor Vurtuin (D’Alberton Callies), Shane Morrison (SA U17 captain, SA U20 and SA U23), Roward Dolphin (SA U17,SAU20 and SA23) and Cedric Conway (SA Welterweight Champ), just to count a few, were all honoured.
