Shooting the Breeze

2018-07-25 06:00

LET me again take this opportunity, and from the bottom of my heart, to thank the management of Maritzburg Echo, especially it’s editor Candyce Krishna, for kindly allowing us to publicise our community sports events.

Many of you will agree with me that a lot of publications are, unfortunately, overlooking community events, especially from the nearby townships. It is always heartbreaking that most of the media houses around the country, especially newspapers, have decided, over the years, to side-step their community events or news because of financial reasons. Talking from experience, and after growing up reading the Echo, everybody around the greater Pietermaritzburg and other nearby areas has always known this publication as the “People’s Mouthpiece”.

Echo has been part and parcel of the local communities that hail from different backgrounds, cultures, religions and races.

I was very lucky to be there during my young days and during the early years of Echo. I saw Echo growing from covering local circles, going to regional and provincial levels. I was lucky enough to serve under four editors and spend 18 years there.

The fact is, the support we are given by Echo management allows us to educate our communities about our events, news, and projects and it also gives us a lot of publicity.

Last year, when I decided to officially start the Ward 34 Annual Community Awards, I was not aware that it was going to be warmly welcomed and embraced by everybody in the area.

I was not only surprised and emotional but also humbled during our last year’s very first event. It outplayed itself, the way it was supported in many ways, and was well attended.

This year, I am saying again to all my Ward 34 community members from Eastwood, Panorama, Cinderella Park, Madiba and Malivana, let’s all unite and work together in order to make our 2018 event big and successful again.

Let us also not forget that we don’t have official sponsors to help out with trophies, medals or miniatures and we need to donate some to make it happen. If we were able to do it last year, let’s do it again this year. I know we can do it! Let us all show that at Ward 34 we are all united and proud of our community.
