Shootout at Chatterton Road bank

2019-03-06 06:01

WHEN Mark Taylor visited a bank premises on Chatterton Road, little did he know that he would be involved in an attempted robbery which would escalate into a shoot-out.

While leaving Absa bank on Monday morning, Taylor was allegedly approached by three men who jumped out of a Mercedes Benz and accosted him.

According to police, the men pointed firearms at him while one man pulled the briefcase Taylor had been holding, out of his hand. Upon pulling, the briefcase opened which, according to the police, alerted the men to the fact that nothing was in the case.

The men then left Taylor and made a break for their car. Once in the vehicle, they proceeded to speed off.

“Once they began speeding off, the security guards started firing, with one bullet hitting the showroom window at Barloworld,” said a police officer who wished to remain anonymous. Police stated that no one was injured during the incident.

The Mercedes Benz in question was then found near the Department of Transport on Chota Motala Road, with bullet holes evident on the body of the vehicle.

Gerret Oosthuizen of Absa Group said that the incident had nothing to do with the bank and that no customers or colleagues of theirs had been impacted by the ordeal.

Sergeant Mthokozisi Ngobese confirmed that, since finding the vehicle, a case has been opened and that investigations are currently on- going.
