Shoplifters warned

2018-12-05 06:01

CAPTAIN Kholeka Mhlongo of the Alexandra police station has issued a strict warning this festive season that there will be zero tolerance for petty theft, citing a recent case that went to court where a man was sentenced to nine months in prison or a R30 000 fine for shoplifting.

Sphamandla Zondi (27) stole items from Checkers in Scottsville Mall to the value of R156,41 and was caught by a security guard and arrested on site.

The matter then went to court where Zondi was found guilty and convicted on November 23.

“This should be a warning to all shoplifters that you can steal small things and still pay dearly. It might seem like nothing or a minor job to make an arrest for shoplifting but this case should be a warning to all criminals that nothing will be tolerated,” said Mhlongo.

Mhlongo said that she would like to congratulate and commend the efforts of all security guards for the brilliant jobs they are doing, ensuring that community members are safe and secure in shopping centres.

“Community members should note that security and safety at all malls will be increased during the festive season so they can do their shopping freely and comfortably,” promised Mhlongo.
