“WHEN I got the phone call about the news I thought it was a scam,” said Helena Coetzee (87), from Prestbury, who won a car in the Mayors Walk Spar “Win a Car” competition on Friday.

Speaking at the handover Helena said she got a call on Tuesday night telling her she was the winner.

“I believed I was the victim of a scam when I got the call from a marketing company telling me the unbelievable news. I couldn’t handle the news so my daughter spoke to them and they confirmed I had won the car.

“I cried silently so they couldn’t hear me and I thought God is good, he would not allow someone to scam me in such a cruel and convincing way,” she said. The next day her daughter went to report the scam to Spar only to discover that her mother had in fact won the car.

“I am grateful to Spar. I am still shocked and excited at the same time. This blessing could not have come at a better time.

“I grew up in Mayors Walk. I am going to drive my new car on the street where I walked, played and dreamt as a young girl. Never in my wildest dream did I think I would be the proud owner of a brand-new car.”

Helena said she has shopped at Spar from the time it was built there many years ago.

Mayors Walk Spar manager Iain Knox said the competition ran in May and June and they believe they couldn’t have had a more deserving winner than Helena.

“Based on her history of the area and the support for both the store and the community she lives in we are honoured to have her as the winner. We wish her all the best with her new car.

“We thank her and the Mayors Walk Valley for the support and look forward to many years of providing the best quality and service we can. We also thank our customers for their support over the years of revamping and upgrading Mayors Walk Spar. Without the support of the community our efforts would be wasted,” he said.
