THERE are just days to go until the biggest concert to hit the KwaZulu-Natal capital this decade is set to get music-lovers on their feet.

Aptly named the Sisonke Music Festival, it takes place on the final Sunday (June 2) of the 2019 Royal Show and brings together musicians and entertainers from around KZN and South Africa for an entertainment line-up never before seen in the region.

“We’re thrilled to be able to be hosting the Sisonke Music Festival that adds value to the local music scene. This will be a refreshing event that is professional, inspiring and brings together different personalities, whilst creating a new tradition that is proudly Pietermaritzburg,” said festival organiser Stephanie February.

Added to this, the Sisonke Music Festival will also provide a platform for up-and-coming artists to share the stage with well-known South African artists.

A Battle of the DJs competition will kick-off the Sisonke Music Festival, with festival organiser Alain Dalais noting: “The Battle of the DJs will be the ultimate platform for our awesome local DJs to showcase their skills and drop their beats for the crowds to hear the music and move their feet. It will be the only scratch you’ll ever want!”

Creative Arts College is proud to sponsor the Battle of the DJs competition, with representative Pravashnee Pillay adding: “Music and DJ are one of the biggest faculties at the college and we are keen to see the local talent of DJs and musicians and also to give up-and-coming artists the platform to showcase their talent.

“Creative Arts College allows learners the opportunity to acquire skills that they are passionate about, like DJing and music production.”

Additionally, the Sisonke Music Festival is proudly driven by VW Barons Pietermaritzburg.

Following the Battle of the DJs, local rap artists will get their chance to light up the stage.

The line-up will feature up-and-coming rappers such a Prodii-G, Dice, Browllynd and Ryan “Riggz” Hoskins, who made his big break with his latest track The Way We Choon.

“Supporting local talent is the purpose of the Sisonke Music Festival, we have partnered with some big businesses around PMB as well as well-known local photographer and videographer Dorian ‘GonWild’ Baatjes,” said February.

Headline performers on stage include 2018’s biggest winner for the Sama24 Awards, Sun-El Musician, who walked away with three Samas this year including Best Collaboration for his runaway hit Akanamali. The song also won him the SAMPRA Highest Airplay Song of the Year and the Samro Highest Airplay Composer’s Award.

Next on the line-up is South African Neo-soul/Neo-folk music artist Simmy, who has carved out a distinctive position in the music industry.

One of the country’s future biggest stars, she has performed to thousands of fans. She also writes and co-produces some of her own material.

Apart from the Sisonke Music Festival, the Royal Show venue boasts strategically-designated areas for all to enjoy, such as craft stalls and artisanal food vendors. Tickets are available at the gate at a cost of R70. For more information visit our Facebook page @Sisonkemusicfestival2019 or follow us on Instagram @Sisonke_Music_Fest.
