Soccer round up

THE South African Football Association (Safa) have left it to Bafana Bafana coach Stuart Baxter to sort out his own technical team for the all-important 2019 Afcon qualifier against Libya later this month.

The British tactician lost Shaun Bartlett to Kaizer Chiefs in December, when the former national team striker was snapped up by the Soweto giants to deputise for Ernst Middendorp.

The Bafana squad will be announced soon and they are set to assemble around March 16. The owners of Premier League champions Manchester City are considering investing in a club in India as part of an effort to increase their presence in Asia, chief executive Ferran Soriano has said.

City Football Group (CFG), who own seven clubs including Major League Soccer’s New York City FC and A-League’s Melbourne City, hope to complete a deal for a club in India by the end of the year.

“We have some interest in some markets and countries like China, but also India,” Soriano was quoted as saying by the BBC.

FIFA have recommended the use of video assistant referee (VAR) technology for the 2019 Women’s World Cup in France in June. The organising committee of world soccer’s governing body backed the use of VAR at the tournament after it was introduced at the men’s World Cup last year in Russia.

The Fifa council will make a final decision on whether the technology will be used at this year’s women’s event when it meets in Miami later this month.
