KZN’s capital will play host to two regionals for the SPAR KZN School Girls’ Hockey Challenge at AB Jackson and Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High on Saturday 12 March.

Schools situated in the northern parts of the greater Pietermaritzburg district will turn up the heat at the AB Jackson turf. Seven schools will participate in the Pietermaritzburg Northern Regional where defending champs, St Anne’s are back in the hopes of securing the regional title for the fifth time.

Teams they will be up against are Carter High School, Howick High School, Grace College, Heritage Academy, Linpark High and The Wykeham Collegiate.

Central schools will congregate at Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School to participate in the Pietermaritzburg Central Regional. Host school, Girls’ High is one of only three teams to have an undefeated regional record throughout the history of the tournament. Girls High have been victorious over the last five years since the tournaments inception. They will be taking on Alexandra High, Epworth School, Maritzburg Christian School, Russel High School, Treverton College, Newton and Eastwood.

In the past, the two teams representing the Pietermaritzburg regions have gone on to shine at the Grand Finals and always being in the medal games. St Anne’s raised the trophy in the inaugural trophy, and won themselves a silver and bronze while Girls High has three silvers and two bronze medals in their trophy cabinet.

“The action is always exciting at both of the Pietermaritzburg regionals. The area grooms a number of our top provincial and even international stars. Girls’ High old girl, Celia Evans who currently plays for SA, honed her skills in these parts, so the area is a wonderful incubator for growing talent.” said tournament director, Les Galloway.

MD for SPAR KZN, Rob Philipson said: “It is always a pleasure to watch the games in these two regionals. The teams play their hearts out and regardless of the outcome; know that they did the best that they could.”

The two winners of this regional will join newcomer team Sarel Cilliers from Glencoe which won the Northern KZN Regional two weeks ago, along with seven other teams from around KwaZulu Natal at the Grand Finals that will be hosted at St Mary’s DSG in July.
