Speaker now needs to vacate chair

2016-04-13 06:00

AS far as I am aware, speakers, whether in the national assembly, provincial legislatures, or in municipalities, are supposed to be politically neutral, and not openly advertise their bias towards a particular party.

The previous week’s Constitutional Court’s ruling that MPs have the right for their questions to be answered, will definitely change how business is conducted in Parliament.

No more will Baleka Mbete be able to order opposition members out of the house, no matter how unpalatable questions may be. It’s now time the speaker is ordered out of the chair that she occupies, and a neutral speaker chosen.

In the Msunduzi Municipality, the speaker is trying to fool ratepayers in the northern areas into believing that the indigent policy is an ANC-led benefit, whereas it is some-thing that is allowed for in our Constitution.

The speaker’s non-neutrality and his bias towards his ANC masters is plain for ratepayers to see. The other parties have been filling in indigent forms for many years.

It is strange the extent to which ANC deployees will go to claim self-credit for something that is in our Constitution.
