THE bodyguard of Msunduzi Speaker, Jabu Ngubo, Mhlabunzima Mngoma, was shot dead in Caluza last Wednesday.

It is alleged two gunmen fired multiple shots at the 30-year-old before fleeing in a getaway car. Mngoma was alone at the time.

KZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele said: “It is alleged the deceased, 30, was inside the municipality vehicle in Mazambane Road when he was accosted by unknown armed males who fired multiple gunshots at him, and fled the scene.

“The deceased was taken to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds where he was pronounced dead on arrival. The motive for the killing is being investigated and an intensive investigation is beingn conducted.

“A case of murder was opened at Plessislaer Police Station and a docket will be investigated by the provincial task team.”

Mngoma’s family member, who asked not to be named, said Mngoma was a good person and the family is deeply saddened by his death.

“I found out about the shooting through a phone call I received at work. When I arrived at the scene of the shooting he was being rushed to hospital.”

According to the family member, this was not the first time that someone had opened fire at Mngoma.

“The first attack took place on March 21. Fortunately, he was not injured. The suspect is known to the family, and we reported this to the police, but the suspect was never arrested.”

The family member said they cannot confirm if the murder might be politically motivated because they are unaware of the motive behind the shooting.

Mngoma leaves behind a fiancée, and three children.

The Msunduzi municipal spokesperson, Thobeka Mafumbatha, said mayor Themba Njilo and council extend their condolences to Mngoma’s family and friends.

“Msunduzi Municipality is saddened by the sudden passing of Mhlabunzima Bruce Mngoma, one of its employees,” Mafumbatha said.

She described Mngoma as a dedicated bodyguard and professional employee who will always be remembered.

“At this moment of hardship for his family and kin, we convey our prayers. We appeal to the public to remain calm,” Mafumbatha said.

She said events leading to Mngoma’s death are unknown at the moment and police are investigating.

“We appeal to the public to work with the police and offer any information they might have that will lead to the arrest of the perpetrators.

“We call upon the people of Pietermaritzburg to pray and support his family and friends at this time,” Mafumbatha said.
