Spread Deepavali cheer, and donate

2016-10-05 06:00

EVERY year, for the past 76 years, the Pietermaritzburg Deepavali Cheer Society distributes hampers to the poor, needy and those who cannot afford to celebrate Deepavali in the Pietermaritzburg community.

This year the society is appealing to the public to help them raise the funds needed for the hampers by donating to the society.

“We are humbly appealing for cash donations to the grocery fund to bring cheer to destitute families during the Deepavali festival,” said Dayanand Lachman.

Lachman added that the hampers are packed and distributed a couple days before the festival of lights in order for those who celebrate to cook or bake something special for the occasion.

“It’s easier for us to collect money because we buy in bulk and get discount from stores. This year we plan to distribute 1 200 hampers and we need the help of the community to achieve this goal.

“Each hamper has about 15 items in it, but with the cost of ingredients increasing, we need help from the public because the society can no longer provide hampers without additional financial support,” said Lachman.
