AFTER the 90th birthday celebrations for Nelson Mandela in 2008 it was decided that the country should celebrate each year of the great man’s life thereafter to ensure his legacy continues.

Mandela spent 67 years fighting for the rights of humanity so it was decided that South Africans should dedicated 67 minutes on his birthday, 18 July, to some form of charity work, trying to emulate the former president.

It is described as an international day of humanitarian action where people are encouraged to do something to better the lives of someone less fortunate.

According to the official Nelson Mandela website the 67 minutes people take out on July 18 is to “inspire individuals to take action to help change the world for the better and in doing so build a global movement”.
