THE only soup kitchen on the west side of Pietermaritzburg, feeding up to 150 people at a time — St David’s soup kitchen — urges the public to get behind it and donate to the needy.

The kitchen opens its doors every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, bright and early at 8 am on Mayor’s Walk in the church hall adjacent to the church.

“People of all ages attend. Some are homeless while others are very poor,” said Aidan Bickersteth, a volunteer.

Anyone who attends receives a loaf of bread, soup or a polony sandwich, orange squash and a bar of soap.

Bickersteth added that second and third helpings are popular among the hungry.

“We give out second-hand clothes as well as shoes to those who need them and our priest is also available as part of her ministry to those in need,” said Bickersteth.

The soup kitchen is always looking for donations in order to feed and clothe as many homeless people as possible.
