State of the Nation delivers nothing new

2016-02-24 06:00

THE eradication of poverty for all our people is of paramount importance, irrespective of race, colour or creed. We need brave leaders and innovative ideas when the time gets tough.

If you were a poor South African watching the State of the Nation the other night, you would feel completely excluded from the national agenda.

President Zuma, to his credit, touched on many issues that our country faces, from the drought to unemployment.

But his insights on these issues are nothing new. He stated what we already knew - the economy is bad, drought is bad and unemployment is bad. We expected him to give the type of insight befitting a president, yet that was not forthcoming.

In fact, no solutions were offered. No plan was given. He stated that they will continue on the path they have been on.

This is problematic, because it is in fact this plan and path that has led us to this current situation.

Former Member of Parliament and chairperson of the Allied Movement for Change, Roy Bhoola, had the following to say: “I was in Parliament for 10 years and this is the first time I have heard a Sona this unfocussed, arbitrary and irrelevant to the social and economic conditions of the poor and vulnerable.”
