LOCAL Shell service station employees Fani Zondi, Mongameli Kunene, Sandile Gasa, and Busisiwe Bauque were named Goal Zero Heroes by the station after they assisted a man who was stabbed, allegedly by an unknown woman, as he was walking by.

Bauque, the Echo Service Station manager, said the team sprang into action when a man who was walking by the station was stabbed multiple times, allegedly by an unknown female perpetrator who fled the scene.

“We immediately called in the response units from the ambulance, neighbourhood watch and the SAPS,” said Bauque.

Explaining how they assisted, Bauque said that while they were waiting for the units to arrive, Kunene and Gasa examined the victim’s wounds and did what they could with the first aid kit as he lay unconscious.

Bauque added that Zondi quickly cordoned off the area using the forecourt safety cones as the scene was getting crowded with onlookers.

“They were able to cover most of his critical stab wounds to slow down the bleeding and, when the paramedics arrived, they were highly complemented for the measures they all took,” said Bauque.

Goal Zero is the retailer’s brand initiative to promote and motivate safety, awareness and intervention at all its sites.

“Goal Zero is basically used as a measurement of days gone without an incident occurring on site. The goal is to have zero incidents and near-misses on site for the most days possible.

A check list is done every morning to determine where we are on a particular day and we update accordingly,” said Bauque, adding that should there be any incidents, they reset the count back to zero and discuss what they learned from the incident.

Bauque said that she thinks Goal Zero is an amazing way of motivating staff and retailers to be efficient and proactive in ensuring a safe environment for the staff, customers and the community at large.

Bauque said no case was opened with the police regarding the incident, nor have the police come back to inquire about what took place.

“We are always eager, willing and ready to assist when it is needed. This incident is only but one example of when we have lent a helping hand, and more so with the victim not even being a customer on site but rather a passer-by. We are not just about profit,” said Bauque.

The victim’s sister, who did not want to be named, confirmed that her brother has made a full recovery and also said she could not thank the staff enough for helping her brother when he needed help the most.
