Stop dumping along Foxon Spruit

2015-11-18 06:00

WE bought a house in Maud Avenue because it provided a beautiful view of the Foxon Spruit, which attracts Egyptian Geese, a variety of birds, fish and other wild-life.

Thanks to the efforts of neighbours the old park has been restored as an area for recreation and some residents clean it up regularly and even use their own lawn mowers to cut the grass.

The municipality has also kindly assisted by removing invasive plants, trimming or cutting down some of the dense growth and even dug holes and donated trees which the residents planted.

Our “park” is now used by students living in nearby digs to play soccer as well as a picnic site over weekends. It is also a favourite walking area for dog owners.

Sadly, despite the community efforts to keep the area clean, it is still being used as a dump site by inconsiderate builders and gardeners who, even though they can see the area is pristine, use the park as a convenient place to dump their rubbish. The mentality of these people defies description and I just wonder how they would react if refuse and building rubble was dumped on their doorstep.

Through the medium of your widely read community newspaper I appeal to fellow residents, friends and neighbours to “do unto others what you would do unto yourself” and refrain from dumping along the Foxon Spruit between Jesmond Road and Lindup Road, Scottsville.

The Richie Road dump site for garden refuse is only minutes away from the Foxon Spruit and there is no need to destroy a beautiful green belt area in our city
