SECOND-YEAR, Unisa Pietermaritzburg campus law student, Samuel Charandura, wants to uplift and educate Pietermaritzburg youth on construction.

Charandura (27), from Manor Flats, started a NPO, Legal Rights for Construction Youths (Legalrico).

Charandura told Maritzburg Fever the organisation began as a blog in December 2015 and said the idea came after some research he did on “youth in construction”.

“ When I finished my honours in international law and human rights, I was faced with finding a job in my field of human rights, but I couldn’t and ended up looking for any job.

“I found a construction job as a labourer, where I helped builders and plasterers and mixed sand and cement the entire day.”

He said his experience in construction prompted him to start Legalrico.

Charandura said Legalrico wants to empower youth through the implementation of sustainable developments goals.

His programmes focuses on research, advocacy and training in human rights, construction law, entrepreneurship, mentorship and networking.

“Legalrico advocates youth empowerment and employment for youth in Pietermaritzburg. The vision is to see youths owning construction companies, getting into professional construction jobs, and above all, knowing their rights.

Charandura’s plans are to get sponsorship and build an academy for youth in construction where they can get information and be prepared for the industry.

“I also want to get bursaries for them. I have started seeking help from construction companies and government agencies. I hope we can get more sponsorship so we can continue with our vision.”

Charandura said his organisation has been invited to attend the Bauma Conexpo Africa 2018, from March 13 to 16, 2018 in Johannesburg.
