‘Sunker bhai’, you have done us proud

2016-08-17 06:00

RECENTLY I had the privilege and pleasure of visiting an erstwhile colleague, SAPS captain - retired, Ramsawak Sunker, affectionately known as “Sunker bhai” by his colleagues. He was always an extremely selfless person.

I was amazed to learn that he matriculated at the age of 53, in 1993. He was forced to obtain this qualification in order for his promotion to the rank of captain. He retired from active service in the SAPS after almost 30 years.

While Sunker was a constable at Mountain Rise he walked daily to the magistrate’s court and back with a bundle of case dockets under his arm - he never used state transport.

I was further surprised that he is an active member of the Divine Life Society of SA.

Sunker at this late age has obtained several certificates in Hindu studies from various institutions and is still busy with other Hindu studies. He is an active member of a Satsang Yoga group.

It soon became evident that he was not resting on his laurels in his retirement and he completed a six-week sewing course at the Sivananda Skills Centre on 28 March, 2013.

His achievements include - a certificate for Hindu studies at the Ramakrishna Centre in 11 May, 2015. Certificate in Bhagavat Gita studies - The Ramakrishna School on 23 April. Currently studying for a certificate in religious Educare which he wrote on 30 July.

The highlight of Sunker and his late wife’s life was when they took over and brought up their grandson. They put all their financial resources into this lad. They educated him and sent him to a medical college in Durban. He is now a anaesthesiologist at Bharagwanath Hospital in Soweto.

He also walks the fire at the local temple.

Sunker bhai you have done us proud.
