THE 29th annual Val Fowler Inter-schools’ Basketball Tournament, hosted by Pietermaritzburg Girls’ High School (PMB GHS) and St John’s DSG, saw 24 teams from 19 schools participating. Spectators were treated to some truly outstanding basketball during the tournament.Following the sudden withdrawal of a team on the eve of the event, PMB GHS hastily created a replacement Tournament Team consisting of players from various age groups. Despite never having played together as a team before, the tournament team did very well, only narrowly missing a semi-final berth. They ended up in fifth place in the B-Section against other schools’ first or second teams. During the semi-finals, St Mary’s were knocked out by the PMB GHS second team, who were unbeaten in the B-Section. The side beat GHS Invitations 24-19; Northlands 29-7; St Nicholas 40-26; Lereko second 24-18; Linpark 38-16 in the semi-finals and beat St Mary’s Waverley second team 32-18 in the B-Section finals.Lereko defeated St Mary’s Waverley 48-28 and PMB GHS beat Pretoria High School for Girls’ in the dying seconds of the match, which ended 31-30, to progress to the finals. The final match of the A-Section saw PMB GHS take an early lead against last year’s champions, Lereko Secondary School, and it seemed like GHS might have an easy win; however, Lereko fought back in the third quarter and took the lead going into the fourth quarter. Both teams played superb basketball, and a nail biting-finish saw Lereko School successfully defending their title, winning by one point: 31-30. — Supplied.
