“KEEP your skin healthy and clean at all times.”

These were the words of beauty therapist and owner of Ekhaya Beauty Professionals, Mabongi Mthethwa.

Mthethwa spoke to Echo about skin problems, how to take care of your skin and how to make sure it is healthy and glowing at all times without spending a lot of money.

Mthethwa has been in the beauty industry for the past 14 years.

Speaking about maintaining healthy skin, she said that people need to drink warm water with lemon or cucumber or mint daily.

“This routine helps with detoxing yourself which inevitably helps your skin glow and become healthy.

“Choosing to eat healthy foods also plays a huge role in making sure that your skin is healthy. You are what you eat.

“The more junk food and unhealthy food you eat, the more negatively it will impact on your skin. Eat a balanced diet containing lots of fruit and vegetables,” she said.

In addition, Mthethwa said that facial treatments can also be beneficial to the skin. “Facial treatments must be done once a month or at least twice in three months.

“Treatments are important because it helps with opening the pores. At home, ensure that you cleanse and tone your skin daily if you really have a problem skin.”

She said those who experience regular breakouts often struggle because this is sometimes attributed to hormonal imbalances and genes.

“When you are stressed, undergoing puberty or on your menstrual cycle, your body produces more hormones and that causes pimples.

“If your parents had pimples, you are mostly likely to have them too.”

Mthethwa offered a few tips for healthier skin.

FIVE TIPS FOR HEALTHY SKIN

1. Wash your face twice a day. Both over-washing and under-washing can spell trouble for your skin.

2. Eat a balanced and healthy diet. This will not only help with your skin but with your weight as well.

3. Wash your skin if you feel you’re sweaty.

4. Use an oil-free moisturiser.

5. Always use sunscreen.
