GOVENDER’S Garage celebrated 55 years of existence, thanks to the vision of the founder and contribution of the son, Jay Govender.

You may ask what has this to do with football - this company has contributed hugely both morally and materialistically to youth football. We are grateful to have such a family in Pietermaritzburg.

It is interesting that in a polarised South African community, many of our Indian brothers and sisters are prioritising helping black child educationally.

Ronnie Chetty of Maritzburg Engineering also falls in this category. Both have been going about their support for the poor without seeking media attention.

Football itself, particularly in our district, needs to smell the coffee. I do not think we have been doing a good job both at local football associations and district level. We seem to be more interested in power without good intentions. I hope people come to the realisation that players are a priority in football. Sometimes we want high office when we have not done a good job in our current position.

Football will find it very difficult to grow under the current conditions. We need to improve our service to the clubs. We are failing clubs on many fronts e.g. poor planning for the annual programmes, lack of properly qualified match officials, fields that are in terrible conditions - the list is endless.

We hope our district gets the leadership at all levels that are committed to serving local clubs and players. A district position should not be used as a step to the national office. It is about time we account for the responsibilities entrusted to us.

Football should be run by footballers. Unzima lo mthwalo.
