Taxi app takes to Maritzburg’s streets

TAXIFY launched operations in Pietermaritzburg last week in response to requests from passengers and drivers, giving the city’s commuters an affordable alternative to existing services.

“After our successful launches in South Africa’s main centres, expanding to Pietermaritzburg is a natural next step for Taxify,” said Gareth Taylor, Taxify’s country manager for South Africa. “Taxify is an affordable alternative for anyone seeking convenient, on-demand transport from A to B. We also pride ourselves on paying drivers using the platform a greater percentage of the fare than other similar services do.”

Taxify is easy to use: simply download the secure and free Taxify app from the iOS or Android app stores and set up a user profile, including your payment card details in the secure payment section. When you’re ready to be collected, hail a driver via the app, and he or she will fetch you in minutes to take you where you need to be.

After finishing a ride, passengers and drivers can rate each other out of five stars and leave any comments using the Taxify app. Passengers pay a minimum fare of R20, with the final fare calculated based on distance travelled and the time the journey takes.

Popular trips in and around Pietermaritzburg such as Brookside Mall to the University of KwaZulu-Natal will cost between R47 and R58, College Road to Chief Albert Luthuli Street will cost approximately R35 to R60, and Chief Albert Luthuli Street to Pietermaritzburg Airport will cost approximately R48 to R59.

When the ride is complete, payment is made with cash, or via the credit or debit card details the rider entered into the app. Passengers paying by credit or debit card instead of cash will often receive benefits such as discount codes.

“I’ve used Taxify in Johannesburg and Durban when I’ve travelled there,” said Sne Nene.

“I’m so glad that it has come to Pietermaritzburg too — it’s great to have a choice.”

Taxify has been hugely successful in every city where it has launched since commencing operations in South Africa in 2016. Launching in Pietermaritzburg is particularly exciting for Taxify, because everyone in the city can now call cost-effective, quick, reliable and convenient rides from wherever they are to wherever they want to be.
