Taxi-rank toilets closed, complaints come in

2017-12-27 06:00

COMMUTERS and the public who use the taxi rank in Retief Street, known as the eMatsheni rank, contacted Echo complaining that the toilets at the rank have been closed for weeks.

They also complained about the unclean area around them.

Complainants said they were not told why the toilets had been closed and claim the municipal workers responsible for the upkeep of the toilets say they do not have the necessary equipment to fulfil their duties.

Msunduzi Municipality Spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said the toilets had to be closed due to abuse and vandalism.

“Security is doing an assessment in the area to offer a permanent solution,” she said.

Mafumbatha said what led to the closure of the toilets is that some commuters had raised concerns about the state of them and that vagrants were using them.

“The municipality had to temporarily close [the toilets].

“Any inconvenience that might have been caused to the public is regrettable.

“We appeal to our community to be patient with us as we are making their safety and cleanliness a priority.”
