TECHNICALS Football Club celebrated a milestone 75th anniversary at the weekend, making them one of the oldest football clubs in KZN.

In an event at the Aryan Hall on Saturday, four generations of players were celebrated for their dedication to the club.

With an unbroken service of 75 years, Technicals’ chairperson Colin Govender said they will be taking the club forward by focusing on the youth.

He said club management and players will be starting a football academy focusing on the development of players aged from six to 12.

“Our focus now is on developing soccer in youngsters and getting them involved in the game,” Govender said.

The club’s grass-roots plan was revealed at the celebrations with a plea to teachers and school coaches to also get involved in harnessing talented young players.

Although the future of the club will focus on youth development, four generations of past players were recognised for their efforts toward the club’s unbroken service.

Technicals FC was established in 1939 by a group of students studying at the Technicals Institute, which was on the corner of Church and Williams streets.

“It was incredible to have four generations of football players from one team at the function. To hear the history of the club from 1939 to now was very interesting, especially to hear what players had to go through during the apartheid years,” Govender said.
