LADDSWORTH Grade 4 pupil Kelly Abrahamse (10) took part in the KwaZulu-Natal Top Model competition on October 5 in Durban where she was selected as a Miss Teen Finalist for KZN Top Model SA 2019.

According to Kelly’s mother, Jolene Abrahamse, Kelly was beaming from ear to ear when she received the news.

“I saw she realised all her sacrifices and hard work got her closer to reaching her goals. Her smile — amazing. That is a reward on its own,” said Abrahamse, who is not only Kelly’s mother but also the founder and owner of Reflections Modelling Agency.

“I entered a number of my models into the KZN Top Model search and four of them have gone through to the finals. We need local support for these Pietermaritzburg models to achieve their dreams,” said Abrahamse.

Looking back at her daughter’s journey, Abrahamse said Kelly has always wanted to enter competitions, adding that she was hesitant to allow her to do so because she felt Kelly was just not ready.

“She needed extensive grooming — loads of hard work, self-belief and some refinement. I finally gave in and decided it was time for her to try it out, not to win, but have fun and have her first experience,” said Abrahamse.

She emphasised that as both Kelly’s mother and modelling teacher she was ecstatic and proud, adding: “It’s powerful when an individual realises they are capable of so much more and they believe in themselves. I know she can do any thing she applies her mind to.”

The work that the models need to put in for the finals is extensive as they have to find sponsors and raise funds for the KZN Top Models charity.

“They have to also do extensive charity work. She is hoping to have fun and meet loads of people in the industry,” said Abrahamse.

The finals will be held on November 24 at Café La Plage in Umhlanga. Laddsworth Primary School wishes Kelly the best of luck for the pageant.

”It’s powerful when an individual realises they are capable of so much more and they believe in themselves. I know she can do any thing she applies her mind to,” said Kelly’s mother, Jolene Abrahamse.
