Teens accused of rape denied bail

TWO teenagers accused of raping a Cinderella Park woman were denied bail on Friday, September 1, at the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court and were remanded in custody until September 12.

The 16 and 19-year-old are accused of allegedly raping a 25-year-old woman in Eastwood on August 19.

According to the police, on the day of the alleged incident, the victim was approached by the two accused at around midnight at a tavern.

The police said the woman was then dragged to a nearby house where the two allegedly raped her repeatedly.

“The woman was allegedly raped five times and was kept at the house throughout the night. She managed to sneak out in the morning,” Mountain Rise SAPS spokesperson, Captain Gay Ebrahim said.

At the bail application the public were excused from the gallery because one of the accused is a minor.

At the hearing Prudence Nene and Siphumelele Dlongolo, among others, demonstrated outside court holding placards, and bemoaned the motion to close the courtroom to the public, specifically the exclusion of the victim.

“The victim is left in the dark. She is not aware of what is happening in there, she should be allowed inside because she deserves to know what is happening with the case,” Nene said.

She said a court official had said the mother of one of the perpetrators would tell the public when the matter would be back in court.

“Even after the hearing on Tuesday [August 29] I had to ask the court clerk to tell us when the bail hearing had been postponed to and reasons why it had been postponed,” Nene said.

The bail application on Tuesday, August 29, had been postponed at the request of the legal representative of the two accused, who asked to confirm the 16-year-old’s school registration and to check his schooling attendance record.

On Tuesday, the state had said its reasons for opposing bail were that the safety of the witnesses and complainant would be compromised.
