Teens accused of rape granted bail

THE two teens accused of raping a Cinderella Park woman were granted R1 000 bail each on Tuesday, September 12. They are due back in court on September 28.

A 16-year-old and 19-year-old are accused of raping a 25-year-old woman in the Eastwood area on August 19.

Prudence Nene, who has been attending the bail applications in support of the victim, said she was told by the prosecutor after the proceedings that one of the bail conditions is that the two should not live in the same or neighbouring area as the alleged victim so that the victim’s safety is not compromised.

The two, on Friday, September 1, were denied bail by the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court and were remanded in custody.

Nene said she felt numb when she heard they had been granted bail and believes it is an injustice.

“What if they commit another crime while out on bail? Even though they have been told to relocate, what if the victim and the accused bump into each other?”

She said her support for the victim has led to her being allegedly verbally assaulted by the friends of the accused.

“The friends of the accused came to my work and harassed me, they swore at me, I was forced to get a protection order against one of them,” Nene said.

During previous bail applications, the first on Tuesday, August 29, which was postponed to Friday, September 1, the public were excused from the gallery because one of the accused is a minor.

Some members of the public, who attended the hearings, said it is not just that the victim is also excluded from the proceedings.

“The victim is left in the dark, she is not aware of what is happening in there, she should be allowed inside because she deserves to know what is happening with the case,” Nene had said on Friday, September 1.

According to the police, on the day of the alleged incident, the victim was approached by the two accused at around midnight in a tavern.

The police said the woman was then dragged to a nearby house where the two accused allegedly raped her repeatedly.

Police added the woman was allegedly raped five times and was kept at the house throughout the night, but she managed to sneak out in the morning.
