Thank you to station commander

DEAR station commander, PMB, Loop Street Police Station.

I, Bongani Gina, Current Affairs presenter and news editor of uMgungundlovu 107 FM Community Radio and a freelance journalist for Daily Sun and Gagasi FM, express my appreciation for the good work of your members, Warrant Officers F. Khan, K. Moodley and R. Manilal.

On Friday night at about 9.40pm, I left my town flat to go to a nearby restaurant in Church Street.

As I was walking from Chapel into Church Street, just opposite the Davis Alexandra Building, four young men approached me, manhandled me and took out okapi knives.

They mugged and robbed me of my two cellphones - a BlackBerry Q5 worth about R6 000, and a Nokia 203.

The also took my belt before fleeing, leaving me with minor bruises.

I managed to get help from a guy who was outside the nearby tavern called Laduma. He helped chase after the criminals as more people joined in.

We managed to capture one of them, who carried the okapi knife.

I would like to commend the aforementioned SAPS members for acting swiftly upon hearing about the incident.

They managed to arrest the second suspect, who was found in possession of my two cellphones.

The two were later detained at the Loop Street Police Station. I opened a case of robbery.

The three law enforcers did a commendable job and deserve to be applauded. They even offered me coffee while I was at their police station.

The above events made it difficult for me to resist writing this letter to express my gratitude. A war on crime is a collective responsibility for both the police and communities.
