ALEC Cowen, a 13-year-old boy, who loves technology and gadgets, recently had his dream of owning a drone become reality courtesy of the Reach For A Dream Foundation.

Alec was diagnosed with cancer at the beginning of December 2015, which led to a series of other complications along the way.

Despite being in ICU, and returning from surgery to remove the fluid from one of his lungs and explore the extent of the cancer in a medically induced coma, Alec soldiered on.

He woke up from the coma and fought to be healthy enough to go home. He was safely transferred to a paediatric oncology unit in Durban, away from his family and home.

This began his journey fighting a rare form of cancer, non-Hodgkin’s t-cell lymphoma. It is currently at stage three and mainly in his chest and groin area.

The battle will be long and tiresome, starting with an intense treatment plan for eight to 12 months involving travelling away from home at least three times a week.

During this time Alec will be in isolation both at hospital and at home, only having contact with his parents and brother.

He will not be able to attend school, play with his friends or see any other family member’s until he has completed his crucial treatment plan.

This will be followed by a possible two more years of rigorous and traumatic treatments such as chemotherapy, blood, platelets transfusions and radiation, but at each of these challenges victory is assured, for Alec meets every day with a smile that promises hope and strength that words cannot begin to describe.

Alec has lost, and will lose, many things to this viscous disease, but is determined to not let it conquer his spirit and his faith.

Alec’s dream was to own his own Phantom 4 drone. He was very specific in what he wanted and why he wanted this dream.

Reach For A Dream KZN managed to secure the drone with the help of many, who sponsored towards his dream. His school, Cordwalles Preparatory School, came on board and donated funds towards his dream.

Alec and his family were invited to Umhlanga Sands Resort for the weekend - their stay was sponsored by the resort. Alec thought that the weekend away with his family was his dream, not knowing what actually awaited him.

Alec and his family made their way from the resort down to the beach, where he was met by a flying drone. As the drone came towards him, Alec realised there was a note on the drone which read: “Alec do you believe in the power of dreams?”

Even as he read the message, he still did not believe this was his drone. Alec was informed that in actually fact this drone was his and that his dream had become a reality. Alec spent the rest of the day learning how to fly his drone and enjoying his dream.
