The woes continue for United

2019-01-30 06:01

WHAT should have been a routine victory for the Team of Choice turned out to be another nightmare in which they seem unable to wake from as they were knocked out of the Nedbank Cup on penalties.

Things looked bleak early in the game when United went down 1-0 to Witbank Spurs despite taking control of the game from the beginning after Joshua Sauls scored against the run of play, sending the home fans into a frenzy.

United responded almost immediately, putting themselves back on level terms with the returning Yannick Zakri slotting the ball into an empty net. However, United’s celebrations were short-lived as Spurs player Khethuthula Zwane fired past Bongani Mpandle to make it 2-1 a minute after United drew level.

The visitors pushed for a way back into the game and were rewarded in the 66th minute when Zakri scored a second goal, equalising in the process.

Mushin Ertugral cut a frustrated figure in extra time after the woodwork was found by his side again — this time Pogiso Sanoka headed the ball onto the crossbar.

Both sides were unable to find an opening and therefore the game was decided by a penalty shootout, which saw Spurs prevail 5-4 and advance to the last 16 of the tournament. Since their loss, United confirmed that they parted ways with Ertugral with chairman Farook Kadodia stating that the club was not happy with the results and the position in which the club currently find themselves in.
