Theft out of vehicles increases

2016-02-03 06:00

THEFT out of motor vehicles seems to be on the incline as criminals are on the prowl looking for soft targets.

Before leaving the vehicle drivers and passengers need to ensure all valuables are locked in the boot.

Vehicles must always be properly locked with all windows fully closed and the alarm activated. If possible, vehicles should be parked in a secure area. Criminals that strike at night often steal mag wheels and car batteries.

Owners are urged to keep a proper record of serial numbers and description of all property that is stored or is part of the motor vehicle, because in the event of the vehicle being broken into and items stolen it enhances the opportunity for the investigating officer to trace and recover items.

People are urged to take extra precaution with regards to safeguarding their property.

All items of value, including jewellery and cash, must be kept locked away.

With regards to household electronic and electrical items, owners are urged to keep proper record of serial numbers and description of property.

With regards to items that do not have serial numbers, owners are urged to engrave their name or number on items, including mowers, weed eaters, bicycles and garden equipment.

In some cases stolen property is being sold at second-hand dealers. Complainants should visit local second-hand dealers as soon as property is stolen.

If any property is identified at the second-hand dealers notify the owner of the business then report it to the SAPS.

Regarding cellphones that are stolen, the complainants are also encouraged to visit second-hand good dealers to check for stolen cellphones.

The following can be done immediately to confirm IMEI number of cellphones.

To check the IMEI number dial *# 06 #.

In addition police will shortly be implementing a new approach which is in line with the Second Hand Goods Act.

All business owners will be required to keep proper records of the sale of cellphones and Sim cards.

All businesses dealing with such sales will be required to submit a monthly list, which will form part of the crime prevention strategy to help curb the theft of cellphones.
