“WE must act quickly and decisively.” These were the sentiments expressed by South African president Cyril Ramaphosa on Thursday when referring to corruption in our country as he addressed community members in Dambuza.

“Among a number of issues, corruption has become a major one and is hampering the economic development of our country,” said Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa highlighted a few events in recent times showing how the ANC-led government had dealt with corruption, namely the events that led to the collapse of VBS Mutual Bank in Limpopo.

“After ordinary South Africans in Limpopo invested and saw their hopes and futures collapse after corrupt activities were unveiled, the governing party in that part of the country decided to take action against the perpetrators which shows our positive positioning and stance towards rooting out corruption and the direction our country should go,” said Ramaphosa.

He added that the only way to improve our economy and institutions was to act quickly and decisively towards any people or organisations that have done wrong.

Ramaphosa said that, as much as the government was doing their part in trying to address corruption, so to should the private sector.

“We in the government are determined to root out corruption in various institutions and thus the private sector also has a responsibility to follow suit.

“This is a new dawn for us all. We in the ANC are renewing ourselves in all aspects,” said Ramaphosa who added that, because of this “new dawn”, people were feeling more optimistic.
