Those who serve others

2019-02-13 06:01

IN an age where we have unprecedented levels of corruption, theft and self-centred concern, I wish to mention people I know who still give constantly to the community they live and/or work in.

This giving of time, ability or expertise is made with no expectation of reward other than the joy of being of service and making a difference.

My wife Caro runs an organisation called Sadd (South Africans Against Drunk Driving) which is particularly concerned with safe cycling, assisting those less fortunate than us and aiding families that have been adversely affected by death or maiming resulting from alcohol misuse. The people who I feel need particular mention are:

• Hattons Cycles: The staff, Nivesh, Nivene and Brett, have been remarkable in supplying traded-in cycling gear — helmets and shoes — which Sadd distributes to disadvantaged cyclists.

• Poobie Naidoo Sports: Poobie and staff have collected old but usable running shoes and sporting equipment for needy pupils for over 12 years. Poobie also kits out disadvantaged sport teams.

• Gilly Bure is a businessperson and well-known personality in local sporting circles. Her infectious energy is channelled into assisting to lead or organise functions like fundraisers for NGOs such as Sadd. Last weekend, she was the driving force in helping to ensure a successful “spinathon” at HiltonVelocity.

I know that there are many more people out there doing great things quietly and without recognition, and I would like to acknowledge all of you too. You are making a difference at a time when it would be easy to give up in despair.

My grateful thanks to you all.
