Tips to help you select the right primary school for your child

2020-01-29 06:01

MAKING the right choice from the start can help your child get the best building blocks in their education as is possible and will also ensure that they are in a healthy, happy space to develop positive attitudes toward school and learning.

Whether you are a parent in the process of selecting a school for your child, or your child is far from starting school, this is something as a parent that you need to think about and plan for.

Here are some key points that Future Nation Schools has put together to help you if you’re unsure where to begin.

SOME THINGS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU MAKE YOUR FINAL DECISION:

• The school’s philosophy and whether or not it matches your needs

The organisation and management of every school is underpinned by a particular philosophy towards education, and the approach to how they teach pupils. It is important that there is a balance in terms of promoting a combination of academic excellence, social development and emotional well being, though each school will put a slight emphasis on one or the other.

• My child is an individual and is unique — will the school value and appreciate that?

If you have more than one child, then you know that every child is different — some are outgoing, while others are quiet and reserved. It is important to choose a school that will cater for your child’s unique needs.

• The school environment

Pay close attention to the pupils and whether they are confident and happy. Check to see if the school displays pupils’ work in a manner that says “we value and celebrate our pupils’ hard work.”

• Does the work covered in the curriculum include a wide range of subjects or is it just writing and mathematics?

This will give you an insight into whether the school values the wider curriculum or just focuses on getting pupils to pass tests in the core subjects.

• Visit and observe schools

We suggest that you contact the schools you are interested in and make an appointment for a visit. If possible, tour the schools during regular school hours and visit a few classes, see how the lessons are done and how the teachers and pupils interact. If there are specific questions that you need answered, it would be a good idea to schedule an appointment with the school principal or consider going to the Open Day.
