Together we strive to excel

HAS your child ever come home and told you it was a bad day at school or have you ever heard your colleagues say it was a bad day at the office.

Teaching is a profession that is entwined with different emotions on any given day. Some think we have lovely holidays and are paid well. Others feel we are lazy and are not doing enough.

Well, let’s take a look at reality. We have many challenges facing us daily and so do our children. How do we draw a balance between it all? We get up, we get dressed and we go in prepared. We listen to the excuses and we console the sorrowful. We also highlight what is working and what is good.

We embrace the difficulties by remaining positive. Our sole focus is to get it right with ourselves first so that they can learn. These are teenagers - their minds and emotions are all over the place. You can rant and rave or you can turn it around for yourself. You may not reach every soul at once, but you will touch one life. You will make the difference.

And those parents that just don’t care, well show pupils how parents ought to be. Be a parent to them. As taxing as this profession is, look in the mirror and ask, “why did I become a teacher in the first place?”

It is a good profession. We touch lives every day. We have the ability to change mind-sets despite all the other not so nice stuff. Pat yourself on the shoulder and keep fighting the good fight. No one does it like teachers. And pupils, if you want to be successful you need to play your part too. Parents, teach them to respect and value their teachers. We are all in this together. Together, we strive to excel.
