DESPITE having dyslexia, ADHD, and being held back whilst in school, IIE’s Varsity College Pietermaritzburg IIE Bachelor of Commerce (BCom): Marketing Management student Mark Mackenzie (23) defied all the odds, graduating top in the faculty of Commerce.

Mackenzie achieved a distinction for every module – 35 in total — over the course of his degree.

He rose to prominence from the moment he stepped onto campus in 2014, completing a IIE Higher Certificate in Business Principles and Practice before pursuing his IIE BCom Marketing Management. He stamped his mark on many of The IIE’s Varsity College core pillars: Sport, Academics and Social and Cultural.

With keen manners and an understanding far beyond his years, Mackenzie became heavily involved with the Social Committee (in charge of the numerous on-campus events), also heading VC Voice as its Chairperson. He took it to the next level by becoming the Mountain Biking Sports Captain on campus and then taking home the title of the campus’ 2017 Sports Star!

Said Mackenzie: “None of what I have achieved would have been be possible without some incredible teachers and my amazing parents! I have found that my dyslexia and ADHD have not affected what I can achieve, but rather, how hard I must work.” — Supplied.
