NOMBULULA Destroyers Football Club also known as the “Tormentors” want a shot at the Super League once again at the end of the domestic one this season.

One of the club founders and current coach Bheki Khumalo said his side seeks to be promoted to the Super League, a feat the club last accomplished in the 2010/2011 season.

“Because of several challenges we faced at the time we were demoted to the domestic league,” Khumalo said.

The team’s long-term goal, however, is to be a revered side within the footballing fraternity.

“We want to be a respected side, though we are respected and known now, but we want to be respected even more,” Khumalo said.

The club was formed in 1997 by Khumalo and three others. Two of the founders have since died and one left the reigns to Khumalo in pursuit of other interests.

The 30-man squad is second in the Edendale Football Association and their top goal scorer is striker Andile Msibi.

Their recent encounter was on Saturday, December 9, which left Young City Stars tormented by the 5-1 thrashing.

The goal scorers, which won the side three points increasing their tally to 48, are Mfanafuthi “Masango” Mjwara, who scored a brace, Skhumbuzo Mofokeng and Mlondi “Gidinga” Dlamini.

The one goal was an own goal.

Their past successes include winning the Star Tournament in Ashdown in the 2009/2010 season.

Khumalo said the side has several impressive players with one worth mentioning being centre-back Ndumiso Zuma who joined the team last season.

“He is a different type of player and when he is on the pitch he plays with determination,” he said.

Khumalo told soccer lovers and fans they should not be confused by the side’s name, Nombulula, which is the name of an area, and think the team is not based in Edendale.

“Our home base is the Lay Centre, the club was only given that name because that is my home town,” he said.
