Traffic dept suspect ends run

2016-02-03 06:00

THE gunman who allegedly shot traffic boss Pumla Dlamini has handed himself over to police after being on the run for almost two weeks.

Pietermaritzburg police spokesperson Mthokozisi Ngobese confirmed that the gunman, on Monday handed himself over to Alexandra Road police in the company of his lawyer.

Dlamini was shot multiple times in his office at the traffic and security department in Washington Road two weeks ago.

He later died at the Mediclinic hospital.

It is believed Dlamini, who was the acting manager of public safety, was shot by a colleague after a heated argument.

The gunman fled in a state-owned vehicle, which he crashed in the France township before escaping in a vehicle believed to be a white unmarked private taxi.

The shooting revealed a storm of tension brewing in local government, with Dlamini and other public leaders appearing on a hit list, the The Witness reported on Monday.

“The infighting at the municipality is like a viper’s nest. There are two camps fighting and things are tense,” a source working in the municipality said.

“We don’t know what the next person is thinking and we have to watch our backs.”
