Traffic on Comrades day

2019-07-03 06:00

I HAVE been reading some comments regarding the road closures during the Comrades Marathon recently.

On that Sunday we were on our way to church having read in The Witness that certain roads would be closed at 9 am.

At 6.45 am we drove to Ridge Road, only to find it barricaded so we drove down New England Road and turned into King Edward Road and then Oribi Road and had a free run to Marian Villa.

At 8.30 am, after the service, we made our way to Ridge Road and saw it was closed off so I drove down Durban Road hoping to turn left to go to Pick n Pay and found it closed, so I drove onto the freeway and along Market Road and up towards Murray Road, only to find the glide off on the left blocked.

I asked the marshal how I could get into Murray Road. He told me I had to drive up CB Downs Road contra flow.

Once I had passed the barriers I was told to make a U-turn and drive contra flow again.

I have never seen such a haphazard bit of traffic control as on that day.

When I asked the marshal why roads were closed at such an early stage when the first runner would only be in the area at 11 am, he said that they were told to do so.

I would like to suggest that at the post mortem meeting, traffic control be discussed at length to eliminate a repeat at future marathons.
