AFTER more than a month since last being seen, 17-year-old Sanelisiwe Buthelezi’s lifeless body was found at the Northdale Hospital mortuary over the weekend.

Sanelisiwe was last seen on August 5, but was not immediately reported missing as she was known to often leave home to visit friends at the Site 11 area in Woodlands. Sanelisiwe’s sister, Zama Buthelezi Zuma, never dreamed that this time would be any different.

“She would often run away and visit her friends in Site 11 then return after long periods of time.

“Nothing happened prior to this so we did not think anything would go wrong this time,” said Buthelezi Zuma.

Buthelezi Zuma said that last week the search began to heat up as Sanelisiwe had never been gone for such a long time. The family began releasing flyers, notifying the public that she was missing.

“It was on Friday that we received information that, on the day of her disappearance, she was assaulted and taken away by an ambulance,” said Buthelezi Zuma, who added that a landlord from Site 11 had informed them of the assault, stating that it was her tenant who had assaulted Sanelisiwe on the day.

Buthelezi Zuma said that after they were told this, a frenzied search throughout all local hospitals ensued.

“We were told she was hit on the head with a garden fork because someone accused her of stealing so we expected to see her in one of the hospital beds, but when we couldn’t find her, the staff at the hospital suggested we check the mortuary, which made us fear the worst,” said Buthelezi Zuma.

Once they found her body in the morgue,Buthelezi Zuma said that she and her husband, Mxolisi Innocent Zuma, were in complete shock.

Taken aback by a complete rush of emotions, Buthelezi Zuma, who had raised Sanelisiwe since her parents passed away when she was young, questioned why anyone would do this to her sister.

“She was such a loving child who enjoyed singing and dancing and the company of others.

“We are currently in the process of planning her funeral which will be taking place at the end of the week,” said Buthelezi Zuma.

Mountain Rise Police spokesperson Captain Gay Ebrahim said that no arrests had been made as they are still waiting for the inquest to establish a cause of death.

“We were told she was hit on the head with a garden fork because someone accused her of stealing so we expected to see her in one of the hospital beds but, when we couldn’t find her, the staff at the hospital suggested we check the mortuary, which made us fear the worst,” said Buthelezi Zuma.
