FOR years Hayfields residents have looked for a solution for trucks that park “illegally” on Hesketh Drive and New England Road, but nothing has come of it.

On November 1, Maritzburg Fever, published a story (“Illegal truck stop, a concern”), in which Msunduzi Municipality spokesperson Thobeka Mafumbatha said there is an operation in place where municipal traffic Police have been tasked to remove trucks that park illegally on these roads.

She said the operation will be on-going, however, residents claim otherwise.

Prior to that Maritzburg Feverran the same story in 2015 when Msunduzi Municipality promised to erect concrete jersey barriers along the strip of the road to block trucks, but to no avail.

Last Tuesday five trucks were parked on these roads again, obstructing two lanes and causing danger to motorists.

According to a Hayfields resident, who wishes to remain anonymous, the Msunduzi Traffic Police “ are no longer seen n the area conducting patrols”.

The resident further claims the situation has
worsened after seeing a truck make a U-turn at the traffic light on New England Road.

Mafumbatha previously said more than 606 fines were issued to drivers during the operation and that as the municipality they are determined to deal with illegal parking.

The resident says that traffic officers have not been seen in the area in the past month and trucks continue to park there until 6am.

Some companies have been made aware that their trucks are parking in a “no parking area”, and they told Maritzburg Fever that this behaviour is condemned.

Dean Knezovich from Key Moves Furniture Removals, said they were not aware that their trucks park illegally on this road.

“We apologise for these actions.

“Our drivers are aware of truck stops and have been asked to park at these stops only, not anywhere else.

“We will instruct the drivers to park at truck stops and deal with them internally.

“If anyone else sees this again can they please take a picture and send it to us so we can deal with it,” he said.

Last week Maritzburg Fever posted a video of a truck parking on the road on its Facebook page and people raised their concerns.

Shabeer Essa said: “It’s very frustrating. Our ward councillor does not seem to be dealing with this issue. Impound the vehicles. “Fines are not a deterrent. No action of fines are not paid.”

Janine Susan Hinde said: “There is no law enforcement in PMB.”

Samantha Foulkes said: “For residents using this road it is a nightmare at night and one day there will be a tragic accident.”

Maritzburg Fever tried several times to obtain comment from Mafumbatha but she did not respond at the time of going to press.
