Trumpism threatens civil liberties in U.S.

2018-07-11 06:00

ANDREW James (The Witness, July 4) misunderstands Ed Simon’s cogent analysis of the cult surrounding Donald Trump as expressing “dire and far-fetched” opinion, largely resulting from James’ assumption that “death cult” must be interpreted simplistically and literally to mean “when circles around the central figure all take their lives for some strange reason”.

However, its meaning in this and other contexts of populist cults, is the propagation of beliefs and actions threatening to kill all that is essentially life-enhancing in society: liberal democracy upholding the rights of all humans, particularly those of children, as well as the wellbeing of animals and the entire planet; protection of all minority groups; honouring women’s right to control their own lives; and promoting tolerance of all beliefs, religious and secular, which uphold these ideals.

The cult of Trumpism, displaying alarmingly despotic tendencies, clearly flouts these crucial principles, threatening their very existence as the foundation for the flourishing of civil liberties, undermining the original tenets of American freedom — offering welcome to those fleeing persecution; providing succour to seekers of a new life in the new world, aspiring to realise their full human potential.

Yet, despite patent evidence of their imminent death, Trump zealots continue to disregard all objective reality, expressing faith in his assurances to “Make America great again”.

What does true greatness mean? The superior might of white, male, “Christian” Americans?
