TWC pupil, Sarah Ryan, is flying the Pietermaritzburg flag high as the only girl in the Midlands selected for the Errigal Youth Cycling Tour in Ireland.

Grade 8 pupil Sarah (13), landed in Ireland last week for the event with 15 KwaZulu-Natal cyclists.

She was one of four KZN girls who were selected to cycle on the tour and is the only pupil from the Midlands to be chosen.

The 2016 Errigal Youth Cycling Tour is a three-day race with five countries competing for the title.

“I am very excited about the tour, but also very nervous as it is my first time overseas,” said the teen.

“I know the group I am travelling with well. We are all friends so I am glad for that.”

She said there had been a series of road races in KwaZulu-Natal as part of the selection process for the tour and had discovered two months ago that she had been chosen to participate.

“I have been training hard since last year - five days a week for about two hours,” she said.

“There is a lot of pressure on me to do well, but I am just honoured to have been selected.”

Sarah said she had “high hopes” for the tour and would arrive back in the country on 5 August.

Her mother Jane said she and her husband Gavin, were “very proud” of their daughter’s achievement.

“Sarah loves what she does and is great at it. She spent a lot of time training and was very committed to it.”
